Can’t please everyone

Today, a very irate user sent me email complaining about the merging of ReceiptWallet and DocumentWallet. He wrote a very long email messages saying he felt ripped off and there is no mention of this on our website. Well, it isn’t mentioned on the website because it is in BETA and hasn’t been put into general release. There is no need to mention beta versions on our website (except for a small mention on how to get the cutting edge version).

As for being ripped off, shouldn’t people buy software for what it does today and not what it could do with an update tomorrow? Does the software stop working just because a new version comes out? Personally I think that the cost of ReceiptWallet and DocumentWallet at $44.93 (50% off the second program) is easily justified. If it saves a few hours of work, then it can be justified. I was originally going to charge $39.95 for ReceiptWallet alone, but decided to start at $29.95 and never got around to raising the price. I’ve always been clear that the products are similar and even have articles here and here explaining the differences. The products do serve different purposes when you can only have 1 library open at a time. However, with the upcoming ReceiptWallet 2.0.0, you can have more than 1 library open at a time, so the reasons I’ve given no longer apply. People have never been forced to buy both products.

I had one user that loves the beta so much that even before I decided to merge the two, but just by adding the multiple libraries, bought a second copy of the software just because he thought the product was that good. A person was willing to pay $60 for ReceiptWallet!

I’m very pleased with my decision to merge the two products and think that it will help me compete and have a better, more feature rich product.

  1. Well, I do see where their comming from though. I was extremely angry with Apple for their $20 “accounting charge” to get applications that should of came with the product already. Their out to make the most money they can, and beause iPhone users pay per month, they get all the updates. Usually program updates are free, atleast for a period of time

  2. The program update WILL be free. There is, unfortunately, a transition period before the new version will be out. If it was easy to make my store spit out licenses for both products now I would prior to the release of the new version. Unfortunately it isn’t. I could raise the price now, but I can’t. So, I’m kind of stuck in what I can do.

  3. I could see being bothered by that if I had bought both products recently, say in the week before this announcement…. I do think you might want to put a quick blurb on your site to let people know the merger is coming. From the looks of it, someone could still go in and buy both products for $45, without knowing that the merger is coming…

  4. Point taken; I have added a note to our store page. Hopefully it is clear; anyone that purchases after this past Monday (when the decision was made) can give one of the licenses they purchase to anyone he or she wants. I know this won’t please everyone.

  5. Well, as the title says, Can’t please everyone. You could close up shop for a bit until you have the new version out. BTW, what’s average sales per day? if it’s like 10 and above, then my suggestion goes down the drain, you don’t want to miss potential customers. Or you could have like a pre order thing, where they can only buy the new version now and will get the key when it’s released, depending on how long that takes.

  6. My sales are enough that I can’t close up shop for awhile. The keys are same for the current version as for the new version. So if you just buy one of the programs now, you’re going to save money. The issue is people that buy both; they end up with 2 licenses, one that they don’t need.
