Sending the “big guns” to Macworld

Sprint had a booth at Macworld showing their modems and how fast their EVDO network is. I love EVDO and thought it was cool that they care about the Mac market. Well, I was a bit wrong. I asked one of the guys there if the modems support LBS. He didn’t know what LBS was; LBS, Location Based Services, came up as the second link in my Google search, so it isn’t too obscure. When I said what the acronym stood for, he said yes and showed me the Novatel modem which had it. I looked at the guy’s name tag and it said “Retail Sales Consultant”. So it looks like Sprint sent people from the local store to man the booth. Are Mac users not good enough to get people from Sprint corporate? While I’m ranting about Sprint, I saw their new connection manager software. It is worse than the “Delicious Generation” type UI. It is a UI that is completely un-Mac-like and is in your face, not just a little menu bar thingy.

  1. I’m still unsure what exactly Macworld is… I know it’s a keynote and trade show… I guess it’s like a CES but all Mac?

  2. Yup. It’s a tradeshow that is supposed to be all Mac. However, it is more like Mac and iPhone/iPod World. This year it seems more Mac than iPod/iPhone which is good for me.

Some goto the conferences, but a majority of people (me included) opt just to walk the Expo show floor. I wouldn’t get much out of the conference and I couldn’t justify the $1500 price tag as not much would be relevant to me. The show floor costs at most $40; depending on when you pick up a ticket, it is free.

  3. Nope, I refuse to cough up the money to goto the keynote and since my blog doesn’t get me media credentials, I’m stuck reading about it like everyone else. I’m protected from the reality distortion field, so I don’t get caught up in the all the hype, anyway. I was on a plane during the keynote. I value my sleep and took my time getting to the show (I arrived at the show at noon yesterday).

  4. That company I used to work with had a booth one year at MacWorld not long after I started, and simply put, no, they don’t. First of all, corporate ain’t that much smarter, and second, most people at MacWorld aren’t as smart as you. At least not the ones interested in Sprint compatibility a couple years ago. Heck, most PC users don’t even ask for LBS… wait, that didn’t prove anything.

(And before you say anything, I’m SICK of vacationing!!)

  5. Lana, I’m sick of Macworld! A day and a half is about all I can take. However, I had to stick around for a meeting, but I go home tomorrow. While Macworld has been interesting, I’m glad to be going home to my family.
